They're Repeating to America What They Executed with Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and defining instances – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of a few weeks, the nation's leader began displaying everyone his intentions for a lavish reception room double the dimensions compared to the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to construct it.

He has done things countless times more severe – the present calculation of fatalities resulting from his reductions to USAID amounts to 600,000 and rising, and this week an analysis projected his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. No former leader would have dared – truly, no previous leader would have imagined – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the White House to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of some of America's wealthiest, almost all of whom maintain dealings with the government.

As confusing as it is to watch the chief executive attempt to overturn the established notion regarding democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who might not perceive it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics a near majority – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.

We have watched throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we were raised with into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they converted a persona of compassion into a figure of hostility who blesses exactly the harshness that he condemned in scripture; this has happened more gradually, through multiple decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disturbing through similar means, a confusing personal impact for many of us.

A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground

Hence I shall explain the Christ from my upbringing, because theoretically Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and because the rapidly expanding group of Americans might have little sense about him since they are atheists or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. The obvious and clear truth that the Jesus of the gospels calls for a type of extreme compassion focused on the poor has perpetually caused the Christian faith something of a scandalous religion: engaging for the populace, but owing to its natural unconventionality needing to be controlled. During the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it basically blessed current circumstances.

A Battle for the Finest Within Us

Therefore I have felt heartened to observe the steadfast resistance regarding Trump emerge in this past year. It has provided great solace to participate in developing the campaign that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired electorate to show up in significant amounts during minor elections. We will need to continue it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags throughout each rally and appeals to the finest aspects in US history.
