The artist gives twenty-five thousand pounds cash award to grassroots music venues

The star has handed over the full amount of his £25,000 Mercury Prize winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which works to save the United Kingdom's independent live music spots.

He was presented with the prize on October 16 as his latest record his work was chosen as the top album of the past year.

He has chosen to hand the money over to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the vital role grassroots venues played in his beginning days.

"I couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it weren't for all the performances I played around the area, and beyond, when I was just getting going," said Fender. "These locations are renowned, but they are facing challenges."

Beginning in 2023, more than 150 of these locations have shut down – about 16% of the entire UK sector.

Recently, well-known musicians like Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the Music Venues Trust in its attempts to help venues survive, by adding a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which goes to help smaller concert halls.

Sam Fender also took part, generating in excess of £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to support 38 grassroots venues across the UK.

The donation supported locations that were confronting potential shutdown due to issues arising from flooding, blazes and bereavements, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Additional spaces received monetary aid in improving amenities and gear that positively impacted performers and audiences.

"The idea that revenue from shows in big venues backs the smaller venues, where it begins for artists like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has stated.

He is not the first artist to contribute his Mercury Prize winnings to worthy causes.

When they received the award in the year 1996 for their release the album, frontman the singer declared that the band would contribute their cash to the organization War Child.

In 2002, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite split her bounty among several good causes, including the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"And I donated a £1,000 to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics program, because I did gymnastics when I was growing up and they lacked updated gear," Ms Dynamite shared with outlets.

Two years ago, Ezra Collective contributed their prize money to the local youth club that developed their group, in addition to other local music groups.

And 1994 winners M People contributed their award to a multiple sclerosis charity after a friend was found to have the illness.

"Receiving the award was sufficient," said artist Small. "The money was the cherry on top but we didn't require the bonus, because we had the honor. So our winning affected somebody else's life."

Last week, the trust announced it had saved two grassroots venues in that region, by transferring them to local control.

The first in that area and The Croft in the city were bought under the Own Our Venues program, which is funded by the arts council and enthusiasts who purchase "stakes" in the venues.
