Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals buying these medications must be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to original mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened regain.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
People who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural support.
