Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by captain Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

But, after the opener made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
